Middle East Evangelical Concern

talking with Israeli soldiers in HebronFollowing a visit to the ‘holy land’, during which I was horrified at what I saw & heard, I returned home and spent time researching the history & revisiting the Theology. I felt deceived by the media and let down by the church - I knew the  situation was bad - but not how bad; and I didn’t know how distorted the picture was.

As a  Christian I was particularly sad that the ‘good news’ about Jesus had  been, and continues to be perverted into very bad news. I couldn’t  ignore it and after much prayer and reflection MEEC was created to reach out to the Evangelical community with which I identify. Evangelical  Christianity has been strongly identified with a ‘pro-Israel’ attitude:  we need to discover a more truthful and Biblical approach.

Palestinian Arabs, Christian and Muslim, have suffered for over 60 years, deprived of their lands, left homeless and stateless, living as those who have  no hope. WE, the church in the west have been complicit in ignoring  their plight. Worse, we are seen to support the oppressor. In January 2011 ‘God-TV’ donated $500.000 to the Jewish National Fund to  plant a forest: the result is that thousands of Bedouin have been forced off land they have lived on for hundreds of years, and Palestinians have their drinking water rationed.

I am  supported by a small group of Christians who believe we must speak truth to power on behalf of the oppressed peoples of Palestine and for the sake of the Gospel, especially as it is heard by Muslims the world  over.

Dave Carter.
